Follifoot Cricket Week

A great time was had by all this week, when the cricket club staged a four day cricket coaching course for nine to fifteen year olds led by coaches Mike Bore former Yorkshire and Notts player and Harrogate player James Tattersall.

The week got off to a good start with warm sunny weather. Following registration Mike discussed the content of the course with the boys. This would include improvement of cricketing skills. Coping with injury, expected behaviour on and off the field and the need for good hydration when playing.

Then the training began with a game of quick cricket then off to the nets for some individual tuition. Lunches were prepared and served by Ann Townsend and Lynn Nudds. Fiona Fox did most of the shopping and was able to pop in and help on the first two days. Maisie whose brother was on the course made some buns and her mum made the most sumptuous banoffee pie which, were consumed in seconds. Warm and cold drinks were served throughout the day and there was a tuck shop. The weather was very unsettled for much of the week. Ann set up a wii game on the computer and organised a game of a question of sport with some of the boys when the showers were heavy.

The week ended with a test match and some exhausted boys. Ann and the boys presented Lynn with some flowers and a card and thanked her for her help and support. Ann, Mike and James were also thanked and everyone agreed that the week had been a great success.

On an ending one of the boys had never played cricket before but with Mike’s tuition was soon in the team and will be joining F.C.C. Another boy from Glasshouses C.C. was recommended for Yorkshire school trials.

Well done to all who attended. The course will be repeated again next year

The season so far by Richard Agar

You all performed well in our first game against North Stainley. We lost but only by a few runs. It was hard to select a Man or Lady of the Match award so give yourselves a big pat on the back.

Our second match was away at Helperby. We had to leave the field for a short break because of the rain but what a surprise we all had. One of the ladies had baked a fantastic chocolate cake. We enjoyed it so much some children asked for seconds. Robert's dad, Sean Martin was seen enjoying some as well as myself and one or two other parents.

Although we lost it was a good team effort with some good fielding by Jamie Daniel and Barnaby Holmes. The Man of the Match Award went to Oliver Bradley for 3 superb catches. But well done everyone else.

Our third game was at home against Harrogate. It was a very close game. Our Captain for this match, Lily Dutton, did a great job of motivating the boys and some good fielding kept the score down. We were fortunate to have Simon Jessup on duty for us. He made sure that the twiggs and leaves were taken from the pitch, which saved anyone from falling over them. A big thank you to Simon.

The game was played in good nature because it was against our fierce local rivals. The younger children did well against the Harrogate pace attack, a couple of bouncers did not cause Harry Ledger and Lily Dutton any problems. Some good shots were played by everyone. Good fielding by Samuel Gibbon saved many runs. But the Man Of the match award went to Hugo Hayes for his swashbucling batting a 4 almost hitting his father's car! Well done everyone else.

Further update by Richard Agar

We had to hastily arrange our game with Studley Royal from Follifoot to Studley as our ground was needed by the third team. I would like to thank all the parents for making the game possible it was a wet and miserable night but we played and completed the match. We had a shock before the game when the news filtered through that the Follifoot supporters coach had broken down on the outskirts of Harrogate it seemed to upset the team as they play better to a large audience.

We ewre up against the leaders and while the team were warming up they noticed the Studley opening bowlers were on the 20 yard run up. Our "three wise men" of the team Harry Ledger, Barnaby Holmes and Jamie Daniel decided to wear some thicker padding. Sensible thinking boys.

Jamie was getting quite a bit of chat from their wicket keeper and I could tell he was annoyed but he kept his cool and played well, our fielding was good and Benjamin Daniel was very quick in the field. he was also the best bowler having bowled out two batsmen. Haryy ledger was suffering from a pulled miuscleand was in a lot of pain throughout. Barnaby Holmes was almost asleep on his feet, he could not stop yawning but managed to stay awake. Charlie bowled well but just could not get a wicket. Robert was upset that there were no interval drinks and biscuits, as were most of the parents. There was a good batting partnership between Sam Gibbon and Daniel Nimmick, Sam hitting the only six of the match. We were pleased to see our Club secretary David Nudds and his wife in attendance. They do so much hard work for the Club they did not stay for the whole game as with the Studley bar not open David needed a sparkling water and went in search of a watering hole.

Our next game was at Cundall School, we went there on Monday evening and what a fantastic setting we played in, the children enjoyed the surroundings, it was a lovely evening played in a very friendly manner, Ian Botham used to send his children to the school.

We batted first and did quite well, we only had six players Sam Gibbon and Charlie Cullen failed to arrive and we had to lettwo players bat twice. Harry and Lily opened and batted well and Hugo was very determined. Sadly our fielding let us down and we must improve in this area. We lost with 225 runs to their 317. Lily who was fielding on the boundary next to the wood was quite nervous biting her nails and looking over her shoulder, there were some strange noises coming out of the wood and I think she was worried about the Big Bad Wolf. I was hit while umpiring in the lower regions and was knocked over. The batsman politely said "sorry Sir". We all had a good laugh at this. All the children behaved very well and were a credit to themselves, their parents and Follifoot Cricket Club.

Well done to you all
